A cutback in teaching positions at Mortimer Jordan High School has left the Blue Devils without a boys basketball coach.

Daniel Foy, who took over the head coaching job two seasons ago after moving from Moody, was released at the end of the school year.

Jordan lost a teaching unit in physical education as part of a system-wide cutback of about 75 units.

“We all saw this coming back in April,” Foy said. “We had three non-tenured teachers [in physical education], and two of them coach football.”

Foy’s 2010 team went 17-15, losing in the semifinals of the area tournament to eventual winner Pleasant Grove.

Foy has interviewing for two open assistant’s positions in the county system, and is in the running for a head coaching spot in a neighboring county.

No replacement for Foy has been announced, but because of the position cutbacks, a new coach will likely come from within Jordan’s current teaching staff.
