West Point Middle School’s sixth-grade scholar’s bowl team finished third Friday at an invitational tournament held at Wallace State Community College.
Sixth-graders Ashton Lindsey, Ryan Hancock, and Evan Franks were joined by fifth-grader Brodie Henry from West Point Intermediate to compete in the fifth/sixth grade division of the tournament. Henry is the son of the scholar’s bowl sponsor Lee Henry who teaches AP English Language and Literature at West Point High.
“My son, Brodie, really wanted to compete, but West Point Intermediate doesn’t have a team yet. So, I contacted the West Point Middle School sponsor, Amanda Freeman, and asked her if she had any sixth graders who wanted to compete together,” Henry said. “It worked out perfectly. She had three sixth graders and a team is made up of four players.”
The four students met for just one practice before competing and placing second in their first tournament.
“It was very fun to watch them and they did an amazing job,” Lee Henry said.
Ryan Hancock led the team with 150 points, followed by Brodie Henry with 110, Ashton Lindsey with 50 and Evan Franks with 10.
“I plan to start a fifth grade team at West Point Intermediate very soon. There are a lot of opportunities for young players to compete,” Lee Henry said. “This is obviously something that these kids are passionate about. I hope that they all continue to play and grow as a team and that I will get to coach all of them in high school one day!”
