VINEMONT — The town of South Vinemont has rescheduled its meeting planned to take place Tuesday, Oct. 8, due to a lack of a quorum. The meeting, as well as the preceding work session, will now be Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Town clerk Kayecea Sasser said the decision was made to cancel the meeting after she became aware that three of the five-member council would not be in attendance. Council members Ross Campbell and Grady Malone had previously informed Sasser they would be unable to attend the meeting. She said she learned less than an hour before the 5 p.m. work session was set to begin that council member Chris Thompson would also not be able to attend.
The Alabama Open Meetings Act defines a quorum as a majority of the voting members of governmental body. The law prohibits any official actions being made without the presence of a quorum but does still allow for the present members to hold general discussions on public matters, provided that the body has adopted rules of order which allow it.
Items listed on the October 8 agenda which are planned to be taken up next week were:
— Paying the town’s Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation Bill of $28,463.
— Payment of $1,000 to local artist Jack Tupper for the town’s storm shelter mural located behind the Vinemont-Providence Fire Department.
— Discussion on the upcoming Vinemont Chillin-N-Grillin Barbecue Festival.
