Time to celebrate: Downtown event returning to Cullman

After a one-year absence, Celebrate Cullman is returning to downtown Cullman.
The one-day event, scheduled Aug. 4, will coincide with the return of a national archery tournament at St. Bernard Abbey. Cullman Parks and Recreation will prepare the ranges for participants at the event.
The archery association has signed on for three years for the tournament, said Nathan Anderson, director of Cullman Parks and Recreation.
“It’s a great event for the participants and our community. We can expect 1800 people to come to Cullman, just for the tournament,” Anderson said.
In past years, transportation and directions to downtown have been provided to visitors during the competition.
Celebrate Cullman, which started as an event to ramp up downtown after a devastating tornado came through the area, has in past years drawn thousands of people to the business district.
“We have a lot of music and fun rides and games for everyone to enjoy, said Ron Pierce of the Downtown Cullman Merchants Association.
“The live entertainment is stationed near different businesses throughout the evening,” Pierce said. “Many of the merchants stay open late and have a lot of sales. It’s a great time to enjoy and to see what all Cullman offers.”
The aftermath of the 2011 tornado was a difficult period for many downtown merchants. Cleanup efforts made it hard to access some areas of the shopping district and some people in the community were uncertain what stores were left.
Celebrate was viewed as a large success when thousands came to the district to enjoy entertainment and shopping for the evening.
This year’s event begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m.
More information about entertainers and activities will be released as Celebrate draws closer.
