Taking out the trash: Annual Spring Clean starts Monday

Cullman residents will have an opportunity to do some spring cleaning next week when the city hosts its annual Spring Cleanup.
Cullman Sanitation Department Superintendent Sam Dillender said the yearly event is meant to help provide a cleaner community and let people get rid of some of their large trash without having to pay a fee.
Extra pickups of large items are done on Friday mornings during the rest of the year and include a fee that can range from anywhere between $15 to $160.
Dillender said the garbage that will be accepted includes any old appliances, furniture or mattresses or other large items. Unacceptable items include any liquids, rocks, dirt, bricks, concrete, construction materials, hazardous materials or tires.
Large items should place them on the curb in front of homes, but keep them out of the street, Dillender said.
Sanitation workers will try to pick up everyone’s extra trash on the usual day of their pickup, but if they are unable to do so, they will come back and make sure everything is picked up by the end of the week, he said.
“Our goal is to pick up that day, but the city will be cleaned up by Friday,” he said.
