Roy Drinkard celebrates 99th birthday

Roy Drinkard, one of the surviving pioneers of Cullman’s modern economy, celebrated his 99th birthday Friday, greeting family and friends throughout the afternoon on his front porch.

As one of the “Flying 50,” a group of local leaders who devoted personal time to recruiting businesses and industries to the area, Drinkard was active in traveling around the country on behalf of the community.

Friday, Drinkard, who was named The Cullman Times Distinguished Citizen of the Century, dressed in one his customary suits and sat with visitors to reflect on Cullman and the future, as well as to enjoy birthday cake and other food in a lavish dining room spread.

A U.S. Marine veteran and founder of Drinkard Development, his company owns numerous commercial buildings locally and around the country.
