HANCEVILLE — Drivers traveling through downtown should be aware of a makeshift four-way stop at U.S. 31 South and Commercial Street after a driver took out the traffic signals in an early morning wreck Sunday.

A male driver apparently fell asleep while driving northbound U.S. 31 and struck a utility pole, light pole and decorative flower pot in front of Hanceville Drug Company, said Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail. The driver, who was not injured, has insurance which should cover the estimated $50,000 cost to replace the traffic signals and other damaged property, Nail said.

“I really don’t know when they lights will be fixed,” he said. “Hopefully within the next seven to 14 days.”

Hanceville Public Works installed four stop signs at the intersection in the meantime. Drivers are urged to slow down and treat the intersection like a four-way stop until the traffic signals are replaced.
