- Oktoberfest’s senior day is always one of the biggest events for the annual German Heritage Festival.
Ninety-year-old Alma Tyree made a lot of people jealous Thursday afternoon at the Festhalle.
The resident of Folsom Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare went home with $300 after winning the final game of bingo on Senior Day at Oktoberfest. When she realized she had the winning number, she yelled out “Bingo!” and waved her hands in the air, her bright-pink nails flashing through the crowd.
“I’m just tickled to death,” she said afterwards.
When asked if she had a good time, Tyree responded with glee: “Whoo yeah!”
David Gratz, 82, has been coming to Oktoberfest for years. On Thursday, he showed up decked out in suspenders and a traditional Alpine hat. He took a spin or two on the dance floor while Terry Cavanaugh and the Alpine Express provided hundreds of local senior citizens with musical entertainment.
“Not many people dressed up this year,” Gratz said, surveying the crowd. “We always have a good time. We danced the polka, the waltz, quite a few songs. I got a hotdog and played bingo. It’s always fun.”
His friend Barbara Tubbs of Cullman won $50 playing bingo.
“I’ve been coming here for years, and this is the first time I’ve won,” she said. “I don’t drink, but I wanted to try one of the traditional German beers this year.”
Tubbs was among the attendees who turned out in 2011 to make history by drinking a beer at the first “wet” Oktoberfest after the city legalized alcohol sales.
Polly Hooven is another seasoned veteran of Oktoberfest, however this year, she attended without her boyfriend, who past away in July.
“Last year, he won $50 playing bingo and gave it to me. I thought that was so sweet,” she said. “I love coming here every year. I love hearing the music. I can’t dance now, but I would dance a lot when I was younger. I can still listen to the music though.”
Later on Thursday, young and old packed Festhalle to listen to the Cullman Community Band and for Terry Cavanaugh and the Alpine Express to take the stage again. The Candlelight Walking Tour, paper airplane contest and keg bowling were planned for later that evening and the award for Best in Fest German Dressed was to be given out.
On Friday, Wolfgang Moritz will play from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by a performance by The Troup from 4-6 p.m. Kids activities will get underway at 6 p.m.
The annual Burgermeister Ball will begin at 7 p.m., and this year, organizers are encouraging attendees to dress casual and enter a chance to win a 60-inch TV. Reservations are $25.
The stein hoisting competition will be from 8:30-9 p.m. followed by Microwave Dave and the Nukes from 9-11:30 p.m.
