HANCEVILLE — The city of Hanceville has annexed two pieces of property on the city’s east side, bringing both Hopewell Baptist Church and the Hopewell Cemetery into the city limits.

The Hanceville City Council held a public hearing and voted on the measure at its regular meeting this week, approving the annexation on a 5-0 vote. Council member Sharon Porter was not at the meeting.

The public hearing on the move passed without comment. Mayor Kenneth Nail previously had said all parties are in agreement, and that he did not expect any opposition to the annexation.

Approximately 40 acres is coming into the city, with about 3.5 acres belonging to the church, and the remainder to the cemetery. The properties lie alongside the corner intersection formed by the meeting of County Road 582 with County Road 591, just east of the current city limits.

The cemetery will be zoned A-1 agricultural , while the church will be zoned I-D institutional.

The annexation brings in the two adjoining parcels with assurances from the city to help pave the road in front of the church, as well as to install two security lights. Nail said the city already is working to fulfill both of those requests.

“We already have one light installed, and should have the other up soon,” he said.

“And that road definitely does need paving; it’s probably one of the bumpiest roads in Cullman County. We are talking with the folks on the county side, so now we’re really just waiting for the weather to cooperate, and we’ll have that road paved.”
