Fairview traffic signal coming soon

FAIRVIEW — A long-discussed traffic signal in Fairview is about two to three weeks from becoming a reality, Fairview Mayor Keith Henry said Monday night.

“I talked with the state highway department this morning,” he told town council members. “They’ve had most of their people laid off and working with a skeleton crew, but if nothing happens, they’re either going to start the red light process either this coming week or the next.”

The new traffic signal will be placed at the intersection of Ala. Highway 69 and Wesley Avenue. Former Fairview mayor and current Alabama Rep. Randall Shedd (R-Fairview) worked with Henry and the town council to secure the light, thanks to newly-available funds collected through the state’s recently-imposed gas tax.

The mayor also gave an update on the playground. The town has added about 11 pieces of equipment, much of which is designed for older children. The current playground equipment, which will remain, is for younger kids. “It’s going to be a pretty nice playground when it’s done,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll have it up and ready to go by the time the governor opens back up.”

The council approved the purchase of a Kubota, zero-turn, 72-inch deck lawn mower at a cost of $14,300. The town received several quotes for the new lawnmower, one of which was slightly lower than the Kubota, but the mayor recommended the Kubota because the town’s other equipment is also Kubota. “I think it will be better to be standardized as far as having work done and parts,” he said.
