The Cullman County Commission agreed Tuesday to begin its once-yearly collaboration with state reviewers to ensure the county’s handling of federal funds measures up to accounting guidelines, topping what was otherwise a light meeting agenda.

As it does each year, the commission agreed to work with the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts — the state’s self-regulating accounting body — to review its handling of federal funds for roads, one-time grants, and the Cullman Area Rural Transportation Service (CARTS) for the 2017 fiscal year.

Any county that receives more than $750,000 in federal funds in a fiscal year is automatically subject to inspection. This iteration covers the year spanning Oct. 1, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2017. The auditing process typically takes approximately two months.

In other business, the commission:

Authorized chairman Kenneth Walker to sign a partial release of a lien against personal property held due to the owner’s delinquent sales tax payments. The released property will be sold to a third party.

Agreed to purchase a 2011 Ford F-350 passenger van for CARTS from state surplus, to replace a similar vehicle rendered unusable from the March hail storm. The full fleet of CARTS vehicles damaged in the storm won’t be permanently replaced for several months; Tuesday’s purchase affords the transportation service one temporary replacement until a permanent one can be delivered.

Approved a plat proposal for the Frost Brothers Subdivision, located on County Road 1447.

Awarded an itemized, one-year bid for traffic sign materials to Traffic Signs Etc., the low bidder.

The next regular commission meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 in the commission meeting room of the Cullman County Courthouse. An 8:30 a.m. public work session will precede the meeting in the commission conference room.
