When it’s time to deck the halls for the holidays, the Cullman County Museum is offering an historical ornament to adorn Christmas trees.
Col. John Cullmann’s image is this year’s ornament, made from alder wood and selling for $15 at the museum.
“While we’re in the Alabama Bicentennial celebration, it was agreed that Col. Cullmann’s image should be on the ornament,” said museum curator Drew Green. “The Centennial is a three-year event. Last year was recognizing places and this year is people.”
The museum is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Choosing alder wood for the ornament adds additional historical significance, Green said.
“Alder wood has long been associated with Christmas, back to the Middle Ages,” he said. “It’s also a highly sought-after wood for carving and cabinet making.”
The museum has been issuing locally-themed ornaments for 14 years. A supply of each year’s choice remains available for purchase.
