Mae’s Food Hall has found its next tenant, and it’s a sweet one.

Birmingham-based Big Spoon Creamery is planning to open up shop in the spot formerly occupied by the Lachita’s popsicle shop, in the process supplanting tasty iced desserts with, well, tasty ice cream desserts.

Slated to open in the second half of March, the Cullman location marks the first expansion for the still-young company, which specializes in hand-batched, artisanally-crafted ice cream.

Begun in 2014 as nothing more than a pop-up shop in the Hoover driveway of Ryan and Geri-Martha O’Hara, Big Spoon grew fast enough to launch an ice cream trike, and then a truck, and finally a brick-and-mortar Avondale store in just two years’ time.

That kind of growth has happened faster than the speed of plans, leading the O’Haras to opportunities they weren’t imagining when they first launched their business with little more than $500 and a passion for great ice cream.

“To be honest, we did not have plans to launch a location in Cullman,” said Mr. O’Hara in a release. “But after talking with [Mae’s owner] Shane [Quick]…and seeing the food hall and learning about the community, it was such a unique opportunity that we couldn’t turn down.”

The O’Haras have a culinary pedigree in Birmingham’s globally-vaunted food scene, having worked together until 2015 as chefs at Cullman native Frank Stitt’s Bottega restaurant on the city’s Southside. Their seasonally-curated ice cream menu looks almost willfully unpretentious, though, with a flavor lineup whose exoticism comes not from a name-check of esoteric ingredients, but from an emphasis on quality ones.

With everything from Peanut Butter Caramel to Bananas Foster to Cinnamon Toast Crunch — and yes, chocolate and vanilla are represented, too — Big Spoon’s owners say they’re out to offer their best take on what simply delights ice cream lovers. They’re also hoping it resonates with locals with an occasional taste from something more than a quick scoop from a half-gallon tub.

“We love the Cullman community and are really looking forward to serving the people of Cullman,” said Mr. O’Hara. “We can’t wait to introduce the people in this area to the same fresh, handmade ice cream and dynamic customer service that Birmingham has come to love.”
