An elderly woman was killed Thursday morning when the car she was driving ran off the road and overturned.

The driver was identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as Ernestine Lewis Morgan, 82.

The crash occurred at about 9:45 in the 900 block of Loop Road, just off Warrior Jasper Road and about 2½ miles west of Interstate 65. According to the Jefferson County’s Sheriff’s Office, the car had flipped over and Morgan was trapped inside. She was declared dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. An investigation is ongoing into the cause.
