Terry Henderson has been chosen as the new principal at North Jefferson Middle, and Sandra Lyle is now in charge for good at Bragg Middle. The appointments were made during Thursday’s regular monthly meeting of the county board.

Lyle has previously served in the administration at at Gardendale High School, where she was known by her maiden name of Sandra Jackson-May; she marries last October. She has served as Bragg principal on an interim basis since Neal Underwood left to take over the system’s transportation division earlier this year.

Henderson is currently the principal at Hueytown Elementary School. He will replace Craig Kanaday, who is moving over to become principal at nearby Mortimer Jordan High. Canaday is replacing the retiring Barbara Snider.

Meanwhile, the search for a new JefCoEd superintendent continues. Board President Jennifer Parsons said that the advertising deadline for the position runs out on June 9, and that board attorneys and staff are vetting applications that have come in thus far.

Parsons did announce a special called meeting of the board for Thursday, June 5, though the purpose of that meeting is primarily personnel moves in the wake of several retirements in the system.

In other business, the board:

• Honored two recipients of Gates Millennium Scholarships, a program by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda which provides 1,000 students each year with as much as $600,000 to finance their complete higher education program. Will Fuller of Minor High School and John Blanding of Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School won the awards; it’s the first time the county system has had two winners in the same school year.

• Approved the final paperwork for refinancing a bond issue due to be paid off in 2020. A reduction in the interest rate will save the system about $1.7 million.

• Approved changes in the reconstruction of the running track at Pinson Valley High, which results in a savings of more than $26,000.

• Okayed several routine requests for facility usage, including the use of Pinson Elementary by Restoration Church for kids club meetings, Fultondale Elementary for a Lewisburg School class reunion and for a Boy Scouts of America meeting, and North Jefferson Middle for a Dizzy Dean summer baseball league.
