The new city park took another step closer to becoming reality last week.

The city council chose to accept a bid of $1.571 million from Clements Dean Building Co. of Wilsonville to construct the park. The contractor bid $1.498 million on the base project, with the rest going for all alternatives on the project plan, such as a shelter for the disc golf course and a sign at the entrance.

It does not include materials that will be purchased through U.S. Communities, a cooperative organization for cities.

The new park will be between Sweeney Hollow Road and Glen Brook Road, close to Pinson Boulevard (formerly Center Point Parkway). Plans are to complete construction in time for the celebration of Pinson’s bicentennial as a community, which will be held in 2015.

In other business, the council annexed a 120-acre parcel of land next to Palmerdale United Methodist Church and the Pinson Valley Youth Association ball fields. The land, which was given to the city as part of a settlement with a land company that did not complete street paving on a subdivision, also has significant frontage along Alabama Highway 75. That frontage could hold commercial potential, Mayor Hoyt Sanders said.

The council also annexed land along Highway 79 that is owned by the Center Point Fire District.
