Stick to water

After living in many cities around the United States and the State of Alabama, it is interesting to observe the ongoing debate around water in Cullman County with the real question being, “Is this about water?”
In these days of budget deficits, why would any government entity propose to spend taxpayers’ money on a new dam and reservoir when:
1. There is an existing source of water available at half the cost to taxpayers.
2. There is no need to eliminate the county agricultural output and the livelihoods of agro-businessmen and women in the proposed area of the new reservoir.
3. There is no need to destroy the Duck River eco-system, a Cullman County natural resource.
Please reference real estate advertisement located at www.landflip.coin/land.asp?listing_id=23946 (accessed April 21, 2010). This appears to be an ad for lake front property just waiting for a lake. Well-connected people are in a position to have intimate knowledge of pending projects. It is very possible that the proponents of the Duck River project are just waiting for a 20-year investment to finally pay off. The elites in a community have the know-how and funds to influence political resources in order to achieve their goals.
Please do not let the supporters of Duck River lead the citizens around by the nose. Citizens of Cullman County, let your politicians and the members of your water boards know that you are serious; make this about water and spending tax dollars wisely, not about protecting the investments of a few.
