Registration

April 14, 4-7 p.m.

Gardendale Elementary will hold its early registration for kindergarten students and incoming first grade students who did not attend Gardendale Elementary during the last school year. Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2011, to begin kindergarten in August. Children must be 6 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2011, to attend first grade in August.

The following items will be necessary for registration: Current blue immunization form, child’s Social Security card and official birth certificate.  From the parent or legal guardian we will need a current driver license, current mortgage statement or signed lease agreement (custodial parent must be listed on the lease or mortgage) and two proofs of residence. Acceptable proofs of residence are current power, water or gas bill, current insurance statement, current bank statement, current income tax papers, pay stub, W-2, tag registration, property tax notice, court documentation, Social Security or other government benefits.  If custody in not with both biological parents, as shown on the child’s birth certificate, divorce papers or court documents must be furnished to establish legal custody. All items presented must be current (no late notice or termination of service or service pending) and show the date. Items must have the same address as the lease or mortgage and the parent or legal guardian’s name. During early registration, kindergarten teachers will conduct a short assessment of prospective students. For more info, call the Gardendale Elementary office at 379-3550.

Magnolia Festival

April 15, 5-9 p.m.; April 16, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Magnolia Festival will take place at the Gardendale Civic Center and will have three stages of live music, fun rides for kids, vendors, pooch parade and food. Free admission.

Easter Egg Hunt

April 17, 3:30 p.m.

Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church will have an old fashioned Easter egg hunt at Black Creek Park. It is for all ages. There will be food and games. Bring your camera to get pictures with the Easter Bunny. Call 631-7631 if questions.

Beautification Awards

April 25-May 6 The Gardendale Beautification Commission will be touring the city during the above dates looking for yards that deserve beautification awards. For more information, call Louie Pearson at 631-9804.

Spirit Night

April 26

Bragg Middle School’s Future Problem Solvers teams will have a spirit night fundraiser at Zaxby’s. A portion of the revenue will be donated to the teams. They are raising money for a trip to an international competition.

Snow Rogers registration

Snow Rogers Elementary School will be registering children who will enter kindergarten and new first graders for the 2011-2012 school year April 11-15, 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. There will be a parent conference scheduled the week before school opening for students and parents to meet their teachers.

The following documents must be presented for enrollment: (1) legal birth certificate, (2) Social Security card, (3) a blue Certificate of Immunization (IMM-50), which should include two measles immunizations and at least one immunization for Chicken Pox, (4) two proofs of residence (utility bills with name and address on them or a rental or mortgage agreement or property tax assessment card), (5) copy of parent’s driver license, and (6) custody papers where applicable.  Registration will be permitted at this time without the immunization certificate; however, the proper certificate MUST be presented before school begins on Aug. 15.

A child’s fifth birthday must be on or before Sept. 1, 2011, to enroll in kindergarten for the 2011-2012 school year. For enrollment in first grade, a student’s sixth birthday must be on or before September 1, 2011.  Call 379-5400 for more information.

Garden Show

April 14, 2-7; April 15, 10-1

The North End Council of Garden Clubs will host a flower show, Fashion in Bloom. The show is free. Non-flower club members are encouraged to enter horticulture samples for judging and can contact Margie Thomas (631-6992) for details.

Pink Ribbon Run

April 17

The second annual Pink Ribbon Run will be held  April 29, 6 p.m., at the Kenneth Clemons Gardendale Soccer Complex. The deadline to sign up is April 17. The cost is $15 for the 1-mile fun run and $20 for the 5K walk. Net proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure. To register, call Tonya Brown at 631-5472.

Easter Services

April 22 through 24

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will hold Tenebrae Good Friday services at 7 p.m. on April 22. You are invited to join them for this special “service of darkness” as they relive the final moments of Jesus’ life on earth. On April 23 they will hold their annual Easter egg hunt at 4 p.m. There will be games, prizes, eggs and more. Egg hunt

April 23, 10 a.m.

Reunion

Gospel Singing

May 7, 6:30 p.m.

The Capstone Quartet will be at the Gardendale Civic Center on May 7 at 6:30 p.m. Soloist Mike Streetman and soloist Betty Phillips will also be performing. Sponsored by the Gardendale Arts Council. This is a free event.  For more info call 631-4883.

Reunion

Dance

The Gardendale Senior Center hosts a dance every Tuesday, 6-9 p.m. Music provided by Men in Black: Jerry Bosworth, Jerry Bradley, Buddy Bailey, Paul Simpson, Skip Drake, and Roger Bailey.

Catholic Classes

Free Tot Shots

The Jefferson County Department of Health will host free tot shot clinics the fourth Thursday of each month at Gardendale First Baptist Church in the Family Life Center, 3-5 p.m.

Computer Classes

Gardendale Public Library offers free computer classes every Wednesday at 8 a.m. Four classes are offered: Basic Internet, basic computer, email and Word 2003.

Benefit Yard Sale

April 15, 8 a.m.

There will be a benefit yard sale, bake sale and quilt show at the Mt. Olive Community Center to benefit Zoe Walenius and her family. Walenius is diagnosed with Neuroblastoma Cancer. Fire Board Meeting

Fultondale

VFW meeting

April 17, 2 p.m. VFW Post 10250, which meets on Stouts Road at the American Legion Post 255 facility, will meet the third Sunday in April at 2 p.m. The post usually meets on the fourth Sunday of each month, but is changing the April meeting due to the Easter holiday.

School Registration

April 14, 3:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Parents registering their children for kindergarten at Bryan Elementary School will need to bring two proofs of residency, one parent’s drivers license, the child’s blue immunization card, birth and social security card. Parents will need to fill out a registration packet at the school. A $30 donation for the classroom will also be required.

Cub Scouts

Zumba

Mondays, 6:30 p.m.  Instructor Erin Trammell conducts a Zumba class at the Warrior Elementary School auditorium. The cost for the class is $6.

Senior Center Trip

The Church at Morris’s Quilt Ministry will host a Quilt and Needlework Show, which will include heirloom quilts, hand and machine quilted and miscellaneous needlework. Mother’s Day Out

Enon Baptist Church’s Mothers Day Out program will offer childcare for children 6 weeks to 4 years old on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program follows the Jefferson County School System calendar. Call 647-9614.

The Miss Heart of America Pageant Program is accepting applications for the 2011 Jefferson County’s Preliminary Pageant in Birmingham on April 10. Every  Miss Heart of America  pageant is a food drive. The Miss Heart of America Pageant Program is a community service pageant where the most honored titles are “earned” not won. It is a family, friendly, non cost restrictive pageant program. Preliminaries are all casual wear. As part of their entry fee, contestants must collect a minimum of ten canned food items for donation to a  local organization. The contestant who brings in the most food will be awarded the esteemed “Queen of Hearts” title. Food donated at this  pageant goes to Ronald McDonald House of Birmingham.
