Anyone who has lived through cancer is invited to the annual Survivor Celebration, set for May 1, 2-4 p.m., at the Fultondale Senior Center at Black Creek Park in Fultondale. North Jefferson Relay for Life is a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, which is researching cures for cancer.

The survivor luncheon is a time to “pull together and share with each other and gain encouragement from each other,” said Patricia Akers, who is organizing the event. “It is truly considered a celebration.”
Survivors of any age and who have had any type of cancer are invited to the event.
People currently receiving cancer treatments are invited as well as long-time survivors.
Cancer survivor Charlotte Guffin of Gardendale will share her story of survival and will also sing for the crowd.
The luncheon will have a tea party theme, thanks to Joy Calvert, who died in September and had helped plan this year’s survivor’s luncheon. The luncheon will also be a tribute to Calvert’s life.
The menu includes sandwiches and trimmings, chips, pasta salad, fruit salad, cupcakes and cake.

Survivors will receive T-shirts and lapel pins. Participants will be able to purchase Relay for Life luminaria in honor of or in memory of family members and friends.
Organizers need for participants to RSVP so there will be enough food.
Survivors interested in attending the Survivors Celebration on May 1 may RSVP to Ellen Miles at the American Cancer Society by April 27. Call 930-8883.
The North Jefferson Relay for Life event will be held at the Gardendale High School football field from May 13 at 6 p.m. to May 14 at 6 a.m.
