Funeral services for Edwin L. Smith, 80, of Birmingham will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Southern Heritage Cemetery.

Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Birmingham is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith passed away Sunday, April 10. He retired from the City of Birmingham after 33 years. He was a member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earney and Odell Smith; a brother, Reggie Smith; and a sister, Vickie Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Janice Smith; her children, Karen (Charles) Davidson, Kenneth (Jean) Smith and Greg Smith; her grandchildren, Max, Rachel, Marianne, Ryan; three brothers, Jack, Phillip and Leslie; and four sisters, Ouida, Joy, Donna and Galen.

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
