Corner and East Lauderdale traded baskets and leads for all of the first three quarters and then some, before Orlando Davis took matters into his own hands.

The Eagle guard scored all nine of his points in the final quarter, and they were the last nine for his team as East Lawrence edged the Yellow Jackets 45-37 in a Class 4A sub-regional game at Corner.

The teams were tied 29-29 after three periods, but the Eagles hit a three to start the fourth. That lead held up until the last minute, largely thanks to East effectively stalling, running nearly four minutes off the clock.

By that time, Corner was forced to foul, sending Davis to the line for eight shots. He hit seven, plus a field goal.

In all, the Eagles were 8-for-10 from the foul line in the last four minutes, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Cortex Birt and Delandrion Woods led East Lawrence with 12 points each. Justin Birgans tied Davis with nine.

Blake Byrd and Tyler Jones paced the Jackets with 10 points each.

In other boys sub-regionals:

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 72, Gardendale 27: Gardendale coach Mark Cornelius didn’t even want to talk about it, and rightly so — it was the worst loss of his career.

A.P. Brewer 53, Mortimer Jordan 25: It was all Brewer all the time, as the hosts made short work of the Blue Devils in a Class 5A sub-regional game.

Jordan kept within shouting distance early on, but the Patriots blew the game open when they hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first quarter, then did the same at the halftime horn

Jordan Bowling led Brewer (21-8) with 12 points; he was their only player in double figures.

Tyler Pelkey led the Devils with 10 points, and also had three steals. Ben Hardiman grabbed eight rebounds.

Jordan finishes the season with a 8-21 record.

GIRLS

Bessemer City 59, Gardendale 44: The Purple Tigers scored the first 10 points of the game, and the Rockets never came close to catching up in a Class 6A sub-regional at Bessemer.

Halkey Hardman led the Rockets with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kasey Jones, the team’s top scorer for the year, was held to six points as the Bessemer defense made her a target.

Chelsey Black, Syntheria Dean and Naportia Morgan each scoered 12 points to lead the Tigers (23-5). Brittany Agee added 10 points for Bessemer.

The Rockets finish the season with a 24-6 record.
