There are 21 sites: Primitive sites are $10 each and improved sites with water and electricity are $20 each. Camping is first come, first served on Sept. 9.

New showers have also been added to the restrooms.

Francesca Gross, Five Mile Creek Greenway coordinator for Cawaco Resource Conservation and Development Council, said the new campground is a good place for first-time campers and for families. Primitive campsites — or those without electricity or running water — are located on the banks of Five Mile Creek and on the greenway.

The grand opening will also include bon fires an a free hay ride.

Brookside Mayor Roger McCondichie said the campground and the greenway have plenty to offer for outdoor enthusiasts.

There is a two-mile track for walkers, joggers or bicyclists and a also a half-mile asphalt track.

The area also offers canoeing, kayaking and fishing on Five Mile Creek. McCondichie said bass, bream, catfish and other fish can be found in the creek.

A pavilion near the campground will accomodate more than 100 people, according to McCondichie. Those interested must call Brookside Town Hall to reserve the pavilion.

The campground will be open year round, according to McCondichie. It is located near the Brookside Ball Park.

The Brookside Greenway Festival on Sept. 10 is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features outdoor activities such as horseback riding, archery, canoeing, fishing pole casting, a fun run and more.
