MORRIS — Friday night the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils lost to the Erwin Eagles 38-29. With this loss, the Blue Devils record stands at 3-3.

“Erwin just physically whipped us in the first half and still maintained it in the second half running the ball right at us,” said Blue Devils head coach Greg Watts. “They had good strong backs and a big offensive lines and we couldn’t get them off the field. Some tough breaks in the first half kind of gets you down. We didn’t play very well. My hat is off to Erwin because they did play well, and they made us not play very well. They’ve got a strong team. I think they going keep winning some games.”

The scoring started on Erwin’s first possession of the game. Eagles quarterback Anthony Bowie threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Martez Lewis. After a Stephen Hall point-after kick, Erwin led 7-0.

Erwin scored again on their next possession. Erwin receiver David Carter stripped a Mortimer Jordan interception and returned it 33 yards for an Eagle touchdown. This made the score 13-0.

The Blue Devils answered back at the start of the second quarter when the Mortimer Jordan offense put together a 12-play drive. The Blue Devils got on the board when running back Brent Nation ran it in from four yards out. After a Tyler Kimbrough point-after kick, the Blue Devils had cut the score to 13-7.

Erwin answered back on offense. The Eagles put together a nine-play, 66-yard drive, which ended with Bowie throwing another touchdown pass to Lewis. This made the score 19-7.

Erwin scored again right before the half, when Courtney Porter ran it in from five yards out. After the point-after kick, Erwin led at the half 26-7. The Erwin Eagles had 192 total yards in the first half.

The start of the second half didn’t fair much better for the Blue Devils. On Erwin’s first offensive possession of the second half, they drove the ball 65 yards in only 3 plays. Quarterback Anthony Bowie ran it in from 14 yards out to make the score 32-7.

Late in the third quarter, Mortimer Jordan got on the board again. After an 11 play, 75-yard drive, Brent Nation ran it in from one yard out for his second touchdown of the ballgame. Jon Paul Motte found Joey Payton for the two-point conversion to make the score 32-15.
