It may be a bit early to start trimming your Christmas tree, but the Town of Kimberly is gearing up for its annual holiday charity drive.

Applications for families who need assistance for Christmas were available Oct. 1. The deadline to have the applications turned in to town hall will be Nov. 16.

Kimberly assistant town clerk Mona Hendrix said the charity drive serves primarily Kimberly, but donations come in from surrounding

“A family’s house burned. … We couldn’t get any clothes for them, but we did have toys,” she said.

Hendrix mentioned the case of a child who had been helped years ago by the town’s generosity. “She told me she would be helping with Christmas in Kimberly when she would be able to give back,” she said. “It definitely comes back around.”

Those who are interested in receiving assistance should bring a copy of their power bill and be able to provide the names and ages of children and a short wish list.

“We not only buy toys, but we buy shoes, clothes and a good winter coat,” she said. “We can’t afford Wii’s and X-Boxes, but we do pretty good.”

She said area merchants like Kmart and Fred’s have always been generous when it comes to providing for kids in the area. However, she said private citizens from northern Jefferson County are also major contributors. “If not for everyone’s help, we wouldn’t be able to do it,” she said.

Kimberly magistrate Jeri Muir said the preparation for the toy giveaway can be as much fun as the act itself. She and other town employees spent a day shopping for toys last year.

“That was fun because all of my children are grown or teenagers,” Muir said.

She said she also finds joy in watching the town’s children interact with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the annual Christmas party. She said the town’s parade and party gives children a chance to meet Santa.

“When we’re in the parade, they’re waving and screaming,” she said. “They can also come sit on Santa’s lap. They may not be able to go to the mall and do that, but they can do it here in Kimberly.”

Those interested in contributing to the Christmas in Kimberly drive should contact Hendrix at the town hall at 647-5551. All donations are tax deductible.
