Smith to star in musical in Birmingham

Alabama native, Morgan Smith, is returning to Birmingham, AL as the title role in Red Mountain Theatre Company’s production of the Tony Award winning musical Sweet Charity. The show opens Oct 6th and runs thru the 23rd. Tickets can be purchased online at www.redmountaintheatre.org or via the box office at 205-324-2424. Smith was raised in Cullman, Alabama and began performing professionally at the age of 14 with Summerfest Musical Theatre, the Summerfest Performing Ensemble, Red Mountain Theatre Company, and Birmingham Children’s Theatre, as well as performing with The Alabama Ballet. She is a graduate of Cullman High School and went on to attend Birmingham-Southern College on a Presidential Musical Theatre Scholarship.

Morgan moved to New York City two years ago. Since then, she has been fortunate enough to work on numerous television and film projects (HBO, MTV), Off-Broadway and acclaimed regional theatres, as well as numerous concerts and benefits with Broadway’s elite. Most recently, Morgan starred in the hit Off-Broadway show Freckleface Strawberry, based on the children’s book by famed actress Julianne Moore. Morgan played the role of ‘Jane’ and understudied the role of ‘Strawberry’, performing the title role in over 25 performances and closing the shows successful 10 month run.  The New York Times called the show “a stand out.. .funny and fast moving”. The Huffington Post wrote, “A high energy and charming show that clicks!” And The Daily News found it to boast “a simple message delivered in the most entertaining way.” The cast, show, and creative team received nominations from The Outer Critics Circle Awards, The Lucille Lortel Awards, and The Obie Awards. Morgan and her eight castmates won the first annual TINA Award for Best Musical Ensemble. Morgan can be heard on the Original Cast Album now available on iTunes.

Morgan has also shared the stage with award winning Broadway actors: Lillias White (Dreamgirls, How to Succeed…), Alice Ripley (Next to Normal, Side Show), Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening, GLEE), Julia Murney (Lippa’s Wild Party), Billy Porter (Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Miss Saigon) and most recently, fellow Alabama native, Rebecca Luker (Phantom of the Opera, Sound of Music, Nine, Secret Garden, Mary Poppins).
