Tabernacle Christian 68, North River Christian 34: Torches clinch CFA top playoff seed

Friday night Tabernacle remained unbeaten on the season defeating North River Christian 68-34. The Torches scored on the first play of the game and never looked back. With the win Tabernacle clinched a first place seed and home field advantage in the first round of the state eight-man football playoffs.

“It was a good football game. North River is a good football team,” said Tabernacle head coach Wayne Dabbs. “North River gave us challenges. It was a big win for us. This win clinches first place for us in the playoffs. We stepped up and we played hard.  I’m very proud of our football team. And I look forward to seeing how the season ends. Our goal tonight wasn’t just to beat North River we also have the future goal of winning a state championship. And we improve in some areas that will help us do that.”

Tabernacle’s Fred Goodgame had a tremendous night. He scored a 60 yard touchdown run on the first play of the game, and he could not be stopped the rest of the night. Goodgame rushed for 299 yards in 18 carries. And he scored six touchdowns. He also threw for 88 yards and two touchdowns. First touchdown was to Caleb Kersh for 54 yards. The second one was to Tristan Castro for 16 yards. On defense he recorded nine tackles and he returned an interception 66 yards for a touchdown giving him a total of nine touchdowns in the ball game.

Also scoring for the Torches in the game, Eddie Johnson threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Joseph Zassoda.

On defense for the Torches Michael Cox and Kent Smith both recorded six tackles each. While Will Miller and Caleb Kersh both recorded four.

For North River Jamarcus Gray scored all of the Chargers points. He rushed for 265 yards in 18 carries, and he scored four touchdowns. He also threw for an 11 yard touchdown pass.

With the win Tabernacle improves their record to 7-0. Next week the Torches go on the road to play New Life.
