Bragg Middle School met all Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) goals for its 2010-2011 school year, despite an erroneous report from the Alabama Board of Education saying it failed reading goals.

Officials from the state department of education called Jefferson County Board of Education Superintendent Dr. Jeff Hammonds earlier this week to report the error.

AYP is part of President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law in 2002. It set national standards that require all students in all schools across the country to make 100 percent of all AYP goals by 2014. The minimum passing grade for AYP rises each year. The goals are split into different categories, some of which are academic, such as math and science, and some of which are more practical, such as attendence and scores by students from different-income families.

Bragg principal Jeff Caufield said it would have been the first time since the program’s inception that Bragg had failed AYP.
