AHSAA All-Star Week: Stricklin, McCleney play for winning North teams

Two local high school athletes played on the winning North teams during this week’s Alabama High School Athletic Association All-Star Week games.

In softball, Mortimer Jordan center fielder Haylie McCleney hit an RBI single, advanced on a throwing error and eventually scored an unearned run in the fourth inning, as the North All-Stars defeated the South 6-3 in the first game a doubleheader Monday night at Lagoon Park.

McCleney, who will play her senior year for the Blue Devils in 2012, was 1-2 in the first game. She was 0-2 in the nightcap, which ended in a 3-3 tie.

In basketball, Hayden point guard and North Jefferson News Female Athlete of the Year Krista Stricklin had only eight minutes of playing time, but made it count.

Her steal and breakway basket in the third quarter made numerous television highlight videos. They were her only two points of the night to go with two offensive rebounds, as the North demolished the South 79-41 at Alabama State on Wednesday.

The AHSAA All-Star Sports Week is an annual event featuring the top athletes from around the state in several sports, including football, soccer, softball, baseball and basketball.

Athletes compete against each other in a North vs. South format.
