North Jefferson residents can look forward to saving money next month for storm supplies.
Gardendale, Fultondale, Warrior, Kimberly, Hayden and Morris have all adopted ordinances exempting certain covered items from municipal sales tax from 12:01 a.m. on July 6 until midnight on July 8.
The Alabama Legislature adopted the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday this year following devastating tornadoes last year and earlier this year. During the holiday, retailers will not collect state sales tax, according to the Alabama Department of Revenue.
State tax is 4 percent. The municipal sales tax in Fultondale and Gardendale is 4 percent, and in Warrior it is 3 percent.
Jefferson County’s portion of sales tax is 2 percent, but the county is not participating in the severe weather tax holiday.
In municipalities that adopt the ordinance, stores also will not collect city sales tax on the covered items.
Covered items must cost $60 or less and include:
• various batteries
• cell phone batteries and chargers
• self-powered or battery-powered radios
• self-powered light sources
• tarps
• bungee cords or tie-down kits
• duct tape
• plywood or other window coverings
• non-electric food storage cooler or water container
• non-electric can opener
• artificial ice
• self-contained first aid kit
• fire extinguisher
• smoke detector
• carbon monoxide detector
• gas or diesel container
Also exempt is any portable generator and power cords, provided they are bought in a single purchase of $1,000 or less.
A complete list of items is available at local city halls or at the Alabama Department of Revenue website: revenue.alabama.gov.
