The city of Kimberly now has a curfew in place for its youth.
The curfew was enacted by a 4-0 vote, with two members absent, in Monday night’s regular session of the Kimberly City Council.
Under the curfew, minors must be at home — with several exceptions — between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights, and midnight to 5 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, as well as during normal school hours.
The curfew allows exceptions for going to and from school functions, city-sponsored functions, employment, church events, emergencies, errands as directed by parents, and “exercising First Amendment rights,” as stated in the ordinance.
A first offense results in a fine of $100 for the parent or custodian, as well as the owner of an establishment where a minor violates curfew, unless the owner notifies police of possible violators. Second and subsequent offenses result in a fine from $200 to $500, a jail term of up to six months, or both. Police officers are given discretion in enforcement, however.
In other business Monday night, the council:
• Approved the annual renewal of a defensive driving course, and purchase of the accompanying training material;
• Authorized spending an additional $1,300 for the new concrete dumpster pas at the city park, after the contractor reported that the pad sits atop fill dirt that would not give sufficient support for the pad and dumpster;
• Approved spending $234.18 for 30 additional email addresses under the city’s domain name, and also the purchase of 100 gigabytes of cloud storage for city documents and backup from GoDaddy.com;
• Voted to purchase seven replacement stop signs, all with high-intensity reflective designs as required by 2015 under federal regulations.
