Local wrestlers place highly at Florida tournament

- A contingent of 15 wrestlers and three coaches from the combined Eastside and Alabama wrestling clubs took part in the West Florida Open. The Eastside Wrestling Club combined with members of the Alabama Wrestling Club for a strong showing at the West Florida Open tournament in Pace, Fla. on Aug. 4.

Among the 15 wrestlers entered, 14 won at least one match, 11 finished in the top three of their weight class and six won their class. Fultondale High wrestler Zach Cummings was named the most outstanding wrestler in the middle weight classes, while Fred Denson of Hewitt-Trussville won the award for the heavier weight classes.
Among those from local high schools who placed in their class:
Fultondale High: T.D. Murphree, won at 100 lbs. (middle school); Dylan Tice, third at 106; Wes Smith, third at 132; Cummings, won at 152.
Mortimer Jordan High: Austin Underwood, second at 160 lbs.; Trevor Barber, third at 182.
Corner High: Cody Deason, won at heavyweight.
Center Point High: Chris “Bubba” Jones, won at 138 lbs.
