Good Tuesday morning…
Weather: Stuck in a pattern. Just like the past few days — clear with a high in the middle 60s, and chilly tonight with a low in the lower 40s. Same for Wednesday as well.
Let’s get organized. The Warrior City Council held its first regular session of the new term Monday night, seated behind a new dais — well, it’s new to them, having been handed down from their counterparts in Gardendale. Mayor Johnny Ragland led the council, which includes three new members, through a series of organizational moves. Among them was the selection of Jackie Wesson as the new mayor pro tempore; Wesson is the daughter of outgoing mayor Rena Hudson. Meanwhile, Gardendale City Council also met, passing their 2013 budget. We’ll have more on both those meetings, as well as the Fultondale City Council, later today at njeffersonnews.com.
More trouble for Toomer’s. Auburn police say that a fire set to the toilet paper draped over the famous oak trees at Toomer’s Corner did indeed damage the trees even further. The fire was discovered overnight Saturday after the Tigers defeated Alabama A&M, and was quickly extinguished. The trees were damaged severely by poison some time ago, for which Alabama fan Harvey Updyke has claimed responsibility; he has yet to be tried in court on the charges.
Sports: They believe in “The Truth.” Last Friday’s seven-touchdown effort by Fultondale football standout ArDarius “The Truth” Stewart earned him honors as the state’s Offensive Player of the Week by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Stewart gained 350 yards in the 49-28 win over second-ranked Fyffe in the second round of the AHSAA Class 2A playoffs. The Wildcats host No. 1 Tanner this Friday in the quarterfinals… Basketball: Freshman guard Grayson Taylor led Hayden with 14 points as the Wildcats decimated Hanceville 55-12 in a game Monday afternoon at Wallace State Junior College. Later today, Hanceville’s annual Thanksgiving noys basketball tournament gets underway, with a game featuring Hayden leading off at 4 p.m., followed by games featuring Corner and Mortimer Jordan. The eight-team tournament continues Wednesday and Friday at Wallace.
