A Greyhoud bus plowed into the rear of a tractor-trailer in the middle of the night Wednesday on Interstate 80 in rural central Pennsylvania, killing a woman passenger and injuring 45 others.

Officials said the bus driver and three passengers were in critical condition and two other passengers were in serious condition. They were seated at or near the front of the bus when the crash occurred at 1:41 a.m., State Police said.

Thirty-two passengers were treated and released from five area hospitals. The driver of the tractor-trailer flatbed rig was not injured. He was hauling baled garbage.

A score of ambulances responded to the crash in the westbound lanes of the highway near the exit to Williamsport, Pa., home of the Little League World Series.

State police said the bus carrying 49 passengers was bound nonstop for Cleveland, Ohio, from New York City. The name of the woman who died was being withheld pending notification of her family.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Akos Gubica, 36, of New Jersey, told authorities at the scene that he was driving to Ohio when his truck was struck in the rear by the bus. Gubica said he was traveling at about the speed limit and did now know what caused the bus to slam into his flatbed trailer.

The crash closed Interstate 80 in the area for much of the day. Relief buses were sent from Philadelphia to pick up uninjured passengers and those who had been treated and released from hospitals.

State police said the driver of the Greyhound Lines bus had been with the company for more than 12 years.
