Turnabout in Syria. Just hours after President Obama went before six television news interviews in an attempt to drum up congressional support for his plan for a military strike against Syria, a comment from Russian president Vladimir Putin may end up bringing about a solution to the issue — and saving Obama from severe political embarrassment. Early Tuesday morning, the Syrian foreign minister was reported by The Associated Press as accepting Putin’s plan to turn over all of its chemical weapons for destruction, a plan that was initially dismissed by Secretary of State John Kerry as unlikely, but then suddenly embraced by Obama as a way out of the predicament. Obama was facing the increasing likelihood that either the Senate or the House of Representatives, or maybe both, would vote down authorization for him to launch some sort of strike against Syria in retaliation for that country using chemical weapons on its own people.

Fireball lights up the sky. NASA in Huntsville is confirming that a piece of a comet lit up the sky across central Alabama Tuesday night. Bill Cooke of the Marshall Space Flight Center said that the fireball broke up about three seconds after entering the atmosphere at a speed of more than 75,000 miles per hour. The object finally flamed out over the town of Woodstock near the Jefferson-Bibb county line. The fireball was brighter than the planet Venus in the night sky, and there were reports of a sonic boom.

Sports: Double honors for Gibson. The Pinson Valley junior running back was named Offensive Player of the Week by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, and also the Spotlight Player of the Week by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. The statewide awards came thanks to Gibson’s 447 yards rushing and six touchdowns Friday night in the Indians’ win over Mortimer Jordan… Auto racing: NASCAR officials made an unprecedented move Monday, penalizing all three Michael Waltrip Racing cars for what was a planned spin-out by Clint Bowyer to help teammate Martin Truex Jr. make it into the last wild-card spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoff series. NASCAR docked each of the Waltrip cars 50 points in the standings, which took Truex out and put Ryan Newman back in the Chase. It still didn’t make Jeff Gordon happy, as he was still knocked out due to the “ripple effect” of the Bowyer spin-out and subsequent pit stops; Gordon took to Twitter to vent his frustrations after the ruling came down… Baseball: The Birmingham Barons will advance to the Southern League championship series for the first time since 2002, thanks to a 7-4 win over Tennessee in Game 5 of the North Division championship series. The Barons will start the title series Thursday in Mobile; Game 3 will take place Saturday at Regions Field.
