Weather: Still summer. Highs today will top out near 90 with lows tonight in the upper 60s. The same holds for tomorrow, with a slight chance of storms Thursday night.

A dozen years later. Today marks the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, when planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, and into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Remembrances of the day’s events will be held all over the country; locally, Fultondale will hold a ceremony at the city’s memorial, the large American flag in front of the Promenade Shopping Center, at 10 a.m.

Little change. Early public reaction from lawmakers in Washington seems to show that few minds were changed by President Obama’s Tuesday night speech about his proposed military action in Syria, though it may be a moot point with that country’s apparent agreement to give up its chemical weapons to Russia. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) spoke for opponents in a prepared rebuttal, and later said in an interview on Fox News, “It [the speech] didn’t quite convince me.”

A parting shot from Weiner. The Democratic primary election for New York City mayor will go down to a runoff, but embattled former Congressman Anthony Weiner will not be in it. Weiner finished fifth with just five percent of the vote, and in a post-election event where his former sexting partner showed up, the Associated Press says that Weiner came and then went, apparently flipping an obscene gesture at reporters as he drove away.

Sports: We’re headed to Brazil. The U.S. men’s soccer team won its way to the 2014 FIFA World Cup for the seventh straight time, thanks to a 2-0 victory over arch-rival Mexico Tuesday night in Columbus, Ohio. Eddie Johnson scored on a header from a Landon Donavan corner kick four minutes into the second half, and Donovan himself scored an insurance goal in the 78th minute. And with a draw between Panama and Honduras played at the same time, the Americans clinched the top spot in the CONCACAF six-nation qualifying tournament with two matches to spare… College football: If September 11 were any other day, today would have been celebrated statewide as what would have been Paul “Bear” Bryant’s 100th birthday. As it is, the Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa will open its doors to visitors for free today, showing off new exhibits about the legendary Crimson Tide coach.
