Time for Tuesday, and time for an umbrella…

Weather: Soggy. Showers and thunderstorms continue through the day, with heavy rain at times. Highs will be in the middle 80s with tonight’s lows near 70. Rain chance is 80 percent today, 40 percent tonight. The rain moves on in the overnight hours, and Wednesday will be sunny.

Changing grades. The Jefferson County Board of Education may take a big step in alleviating overcrowding at Fultondale Elementary School. The board will take up an agenda item at Tuesday morning’s meeting that would take sixth grade classes away from the school and move them to Fultondale High. The elementary school is more than 130 students over the designed capacity, and has resorted to portable classrooms. We’ll have the decision soon after it comes down.

Bonds issued. The Gardendale City Council authorized a municipal general-obligation bond issue of more than $6.7 million in Monday night’s meeting. The bonds will pay off the line of credit used to build the new Public Safety Center, and also to build the new City Hall. The council heard the first reading on an ordinance that would slightly relax laws concerning firearm use in the city.

Struck down. The U.S. Supreme Court said Monday that an Arizona law that required voters in federal elections to show proof of citizenship was unconstitutional because that part of the state law was trumped by federal law. In a 7-2 decision, the court said the law unfairly hindered legal voters who didn’t have their paperwork in order. Alabama has a similar law, but it was not addressed by the court

Sports: Boston Strong, indeed. The Boston Bruins took a two-games-to-one lead in the Stanley Cup Finals, thanks to a 2-0 shutout at home over the Chicago Blackhawks. Daniel Paille and Patrice Bergeron scored a goal each, while goalie Tuukka Rask tallied 28 saves. Game Four is on Wednesday night… Football: Mortimer Jordan quarterback Devlin Hodges has made up his mind on where he’ll play his college ball. Hodges verbally committed to the University of Southern Mississippi on Monday. Hodges had been recruited by SEC schools such as Alabama and Ole Miss.
