Corner rebounded from an overtime loss to Fultondale by crushing Curry 42-26 Tuesday night.

 “I think we came out with the right attitude that we needed to start playing better in general before we head into the final stretch,” said Corner coach Jeff Smith.

A tight first half ended with Corner freshman forward Avery Wakefield putting back a Carrissa Reeves miss as time expired, to take an 18-16 advantage into the locker room. That was Wakefield’s only field goal of the half.

The home team had the lead despite shooting 0-for-5 from behind the 3-point arc, and a dismal 4-for-11 from the charity stripe in the first 16 minutes.

In the third quarter, Corner turned their defense into offense and burned Curry in transition. They used aggressive defense and an opportunistic mentality on the fast break to earn a 33-20 lead with only eight minutes remaining.

“We struggle shooting the ball from the outside sometimes so we stress scoring off of our defense,” said Smith. “We seemed to be active and getting into the passing lanes to force some turnovers and score.”

Logan Black, Mary Beth Scott and Emily Aaron combined for 18 of Curry’s 26 points. Black had nine of them herself.

The trio was no match for Corner’s high-low combo of Reeves and Andrea Debord. Reeves orchestrated the offense from the point while scoring 14 points and securing eight rebounds. Debord did most of her work in the paint, as she shot a blistering 63 percent from the field with 11 points and eight rebounds.

“This was a big win for us tonight because we have not been playing very well lately,” said Smith.

Corner will be back in action on Thursday night when they visit their archrivals at Hayden.
