Weather: Rain, rain and more rain. You will need your umbrella a lot around here for the next few days, but at least it will be relatively warm. Today’s high will reach the upper 50s, with temperatures actually steady or rising through the nighttime hours and a high near 70 on Thursday. Chances of rain are 90 percent today, 40 percent tonight and 40 percent tomorrow.

Kimberly rezoning denied. A request by the bank that owns the former IGA supermarket on U.S. 31 to rezone the property from commercial to institutional was turned down by the Kimberly City Council during a sometimes-testy meeting Tuesday night. The council vote was three in favor and three against, with Mayor Bob Ellerbrock casting the deciding “no” vote. Peoples Bank of Alabama, which took over the property after the supermarket owners defaulted, has been trying to sell the property to commercial ventures, but nine have been forthcoming. Church 29:11 wants to purchase the property to move its fast-growing congregation from Mt. Olive, but some city residents objected, saying that the city badly needs the sales-tax revenue that a business there would generate. Church supporters filled the council chambers and spilled over into the hallway and adjacent meeting room.

Sports: That was fun — now back to work. Nick Saban’s famous rule that allows the team and himself 24 hours to celebrate a victory kicks in today, the second day after Alabama’s beatdown of Notre Dame in the BCS Championship Game. Saban was already looking ahead Tuesday in a press conference, discussing whether juniors Dee Milliner, D.J. Fluker and Eddie Lacy will leave a year early to turn pro. Milliner is the most likely to depart as a high first-round draft pick. Aside from that, the departing senior class is smaller than usual, so Saban will be well-stocked for another title run in 2013. Oh yeah, there’s a speedy kid from Fultondale on his way to Tuscaloosa in the fall as well… High school basketball: A 56-47 win Tuesday by Walker over visiting Mortimer Jordan sets up a game Friday night at Hayden that will decide the girls’ regular-season area 12 winner and home-court advantage. On the boys’ side, the host Vikings ended Jordan’s 12-game winning streak with a 68-63 win. Elsewhere in boys play, Gardendale fell to Carver, Pinson Valley topped Moody, Hayden fall to Cleveland and Tabernacle Christian beat Cullman Christian. In girls’ play, the Rockets and Wildcats prevailed while the Torches lost.
