Some homes in north Jefferson County are now much safer, thanks to the efforts of local firefighters.

On Nov. 22, three firemen with the Warrior Fire Department delivered smoke detectors to Warrior Elementary School.

Neely had asked teachers at the school to sent letters home with students to find out whose homes have smoke detectors. Kindergarten teacher Connie Fuller helped head up the project at school.

The school received letters from the families of 50 students stating that their houses do not have the devices.

So Neely started asking around in the community and found others willing to help. Richard Love of Richard Love Associates and Stewart Lee of State Farm both made donations to purchase smoke detectors for the students’ families. Ace Hardware sold the detectors at cost.

“The Christmas season is getting here, along with cold weather, and we want these installed before people start using heaters and extension cords,” said Fire Chief Clay Neely.

Fuller and WES principal Dr. Joe Garner were happy to receive the devices on Friday. Fuller said she would make sure the devices went home with students whose families need them.

Neely said the detectors come with instructions so adults in the homes will be able to install them properly.

In addition to the more than 50 devices given to students, Neely said the department was able to buy additional ones that will be given out to senior citizens in Warrior.
