The Town of Kimberly’s revival of an old tradition was a reflection of the area’s “good old days.”
On Saturday, hundreds of people took part in Doss Ferry May Days 2009 at the Doss Ferry subdivision in Kimberly.
Subdivision developers Shannon and Jennifer McCord were the organizers.
Shannon McCord got the idea to host the festival because he learned that the Town of Kimberly once held an annual May Days festival complete with pig chasing and country cook-offs.
Saturday’s all-day event featured music, food, activities for children and vendors.
Also, Kimberly Fire Department volunteers were there with a fire truck and the Kimberly Police Department kept a close watch on the festival all day.
The purpose of the event was to raise funds for causes that benefit children. The amount raised was not available by press time Tuesday.
Seventy-five percent of the proceeds will be divided equally between Mortimer Jordan High, North Jefferson Middle and Bryan Elementary schools; the Christmas in Kimberly program will receive 15 percent; and Church of the Highlands will receive 10 percent for children’s missions trips.
One of the most popular events of the day was an afternoon performance by Dynamic Edition Clogging Team. The team has won seven national championships and finished fourth on MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew.”
Another hit was bluegrass music by Rough Edges, a band from east Tennessee.
Local entertainment was provided by the Mortimer Jordan High School Chamber Choir.
Boy Scout Troop No. 283 kicked off the day by leading the Pledge of Allegiance before Kimberly Town Councilman Brad Stark announced winners of the Kimberly logo and slogan contest.
The winning designs will become the official logo and slogan for the Town of Kimberly. Winners and runners-up, along with their prizes were:
• Logo winner, Drayton Dobbs, 7th grade, $100
• Slogan winner, Kelsey Lyvers, 11th grade, $100
• Slogan, Seth Bowman, 8th grade, $50
• Logo, Blake Lawson, 11th grade, $50
• Slogan, Haley Price, 2nd grade, $50
• Logo, Bailey Powell, 5th grade, $50
More than 60 businesses sponsored Doss Ferry May Days, with the two largest donors being IGA MarketPlace and Capstone Partners, LLC.
In addition, several area merchants contributed prizes for a raffle.
More than 40 volunteers helped with the event.
