According to a report by Chief Deputy Randy Christian, deputies were called to the Hidden Valley Trailer Park at the 2800 block of Potts Hollow Road at about 7 p.m. on Saturday to investigate reports of domestic violence.

“Three adults were dead on the scene and the initial indication is a male and female were murdered and the shooter turned the gun on himself and committed suicide,” said Christian.

The two victims were a 32-year-old woman, Wendy McClendon Munoz, and a 34-year-old man, Joel Clayton. The shooter has been identified as 49-year-old Renato Mata. All three were from Birmingham.

According to the sheriff’s office, information given to investigators suggest Mata and Munoz were previously romantically involved, and that Munoz and Clayton were in a relationship at the time of the murders. According to witnesses, Mata appeared at a cookout the couple was having at Hidden Valley. Mata allegedly shot both victims, killing Clayton and wounding Munoz. He followed her into a trailer and reportedly fatally shot her, then returned to the backyard and turned the gun on himself, according to deputies’ reports.
