- Hayden coach John Simmons watches the unfolding play at first base, as baserunner Tiffany Ausborn rounds third headed for home in the second inning of Monday’s 11-4 win over Oneonta.
After a school-record 22 straight road games, Hayden’s home opener in softball was a welcome sight.
And the Wildcats responded in kind, as they defeated Oneonta, the ninth-ranked team in Class 4A, by an 11-4 score Monday afternoon.
Catcher Madison Durham hit two doubles, scored twice and drove in a run. Shortstop and middle reliever Mara Conner hit a double and a single, scored twice and batted in two runs.
“Our batting is getting better,” Hayden coach John Simmons said. “We didn’t start off that strong except for our first tournament, and we haven’t had much practice. But we got two strong days in last week.”
Starter Hannah Butts got the win for Hayden (15-8), scattering four hits and one run over 32/3 innings. Caitlin Kirklin was the closer, with just one hit (a solo homer by Redskins pitcher Rebecca Sloan) in 21/3 innings’ work.
Hayden 22, Erwin 0 (3 innings): Pitcher Ashlon Dutton pitched a three-inning perfect game Friday night, striking out five of the nine Eagle batters she faced.
The Wildcats banged out 18 hits, including a two-run homer from Mara Conner plus two doubles from Brittany Thomas. Dutton, Meagan Holt and Caitlin Williams also hit doubles.
