Senior citizens will have a chance this week to have free basic health checkups and visit with friends and neighbors.

For the first time in north Jefferson County, at least in recent memory, four senior centers are jointly hosting a senior health fair.

The senior centers at Warrior, Morris, Mt. Olive and Kimberly are holding the event Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the former National Guard armory at 140 Cane Creek Rd. in Warrior.

The Jefferson County Office of Senior Citizens Services is sponsoring the event.

Morris Senior Center director Eloise Blankenship said up to 40 vendors are scheduled to be at the health fair.

“There will be many, many vendors, including health vendors who will take blood pressures, blood sugars and cholesterol checks for free,” said Jody Newman, director of the Kimberly Senior Center. “With all of the vendors attending, you will find the answers to many of your healthcare questions.”

In addition, there will be booths with food for sale, including Big Daddy’s Bar-B-Q of Warrior and Charlsie’s Catering and Cakes of Gardendale.

The Kimberly Senior Center will also be selling hot dogs to raise money for the center.

There will also be door prizes, arts and crafts venders and no lack of entertainment.

Dick Nail and the Uplanders Band will perform for the crowd with bluegrass and gospel music starting at 10 a.m.

At 11 a.m., Leslie Davis of Smart Moves will invite attendees to exercise or line dance with her.

The seniors at the Kimberly center are familiar with the Smart Moves routine.

“We do it at our center weekly, as do most centers in our area. It’s a whole lot of fun,” Newman said.
