PREP TRACK & FIELD: Cold Springs girls take home Class 2A title; locals shine at state meets

Published 3:14 am Sunday, May 4, 2025

Cold Springs’ varsity girls are back on top once again.

The Eagles racked up 101 points at this year’s state track and field meet, holding off Cornerstone (95) to claim their second Class 2A title in the past three seasons.

Ella Dickerson (high jump) and Reese Swidecki (1,600-meter run) each won their respective events, while Ivy Johnson delivered gold-medal showings in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter ambulatory.

Swidecki tossed in a runner-up showing in the 3,200-meter run, while Dickerson claimed a pair of third-place finishes in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles.

Claire Huffstutler, Macie Huffstutler, Ally Mavers and Swidecki captured silver in the 4×800-meter relay — as did Paizley Whitlow in the pole vault. Whitlow also placed third in the 3,200-meter run, while Claire Huffstutler and Ryleigh Wright shared a third-place finish in the pole vault.

“This group of girls has fought so hard to earn this championship,” Dickerson said. “I couldn’t be more proud of every single of them, especially my girl ‘Blue Eagles’ Ivy (Johnson). None of this would be possible without Jesus, though. This time last year, my life looked really different and it was hard to picture coming back, much less walking away with a state championship and three medals.”

Holly Pond’s Travis Barnett, meanwhile, highlighted a three-medal event with a first-place showing in the Class 3A 1,600-meter run. He also finished second in the 800-meter run and third in the 3,200-meter run. Teammate Daniel Figueroa (100-meter, 200-meter, discus and javelin ambulatory) took home gold in all four of his events.

Cold Springs’ Lindan Hill earned top honors in the Class 2A high jump, while Addison’s Bradley Willette (Class 1A discus), Hanceville’s Eli Akin (Class 3A discus), Holly Pond’s Millie McBee (Class 3A 400-meter dash), Vinemont’s Caroline Miller (Class 3A high jump) and Vinemont’s Brady Johnson (Class 3A 3,200-meter run) secured silver medals in their respective events as well. McBee also claimed a bronze medal in the Class 3A long jump.

Other third-place finishers included: Cold Springs’ Blake Belcher (Class 2A pole vault), Cullman Christian’s Elisabeth DeCicco (Class 1A 800-meter run), Cullman Christian’s Katelee Blalock (Class 1A high jump), Holly Pond’s Miguel Garcia (Class 3A high jump), St. Bernard’s Madi Kerber (Class 1A 1,600-meter run) and St. Bernard’s Parker Guthery (Class 1A 3,200-meter run).

Numerous local standouts also medaled in Gulf Shores.

Fairview’s Alex England (Class 5A 1,600-meter run), Good Hope’s Drake Nichols (Class 4A 1,600-meter run and 800-meter run), Fairview’s Allyson Hill (Class 5A long jump) and Good Hope’s Kynzlee Garmon (Class 4A javelin) finished second in their respective events, while Cullman’s Alexander Renteria (Class 6A pole vault), Fairview’s Nic Fallin (Class 5A long jump and triple jump), West Point’s Rene Moreno-Tovar (Class 5A 3,200-meter run), Hill (Class 5A triple jump), Good Hope’s Cadence Watson (Class 4A high jump) and Good Hope’s Macey Denton (Class 4A discus) earned third-place showings.
