Chase Handley pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Gardendale to a 5-0 victory over Oak Mountain in Wednesday’s final round-robin game of the Nike Gulf Shores Classic baseball tournament.

The Rockets then lost to Huntsville 7-1 in Thursday’s semifinal game.

Handley (2-1) scattered the two hits over six innings, and never found himself in any real trouble. He allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out three Eagles.

He also was 2-for-3 in batting with singles in the first and third innings as part of Rocket scoring rallies.

Austin Vaughn pitched one hitless inning of relief.

Gardendale (13-5) got on the board with a run in the first when Casey Partridge, a courtesy runner for Handley, scored from third base on a wild pitch.

The Rockets put up three more runs in the third when Jeffrey Lankford sungled home Vaughn, who got on base with a lead-off walk and moved to second on a Handley hit. Daniel Swann brought Partridge in with a sacrifice fly. Barrett Edwards then drove in Jeffrey Lankford with a bunt.

Swann’s double in the fifth sent Lankford across for the Rockets’ last run.

Oak Mountain starter Jake Hubbard, an Alabama signee, went the distance. He struck out seven Rockets, but also gave up seven hits plus three walks.

Lankford was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Swann hit a double and brought in two runs.

Huntsville 7, Gardendale 1: In Thursday’s semifinal game, Rockets starter Kyle Large suffered his first loss in six decisions.

The Panthers’ Andrew Davis provided the big blow with a two-run homer off Large in the third inning.

Gardendale scored their only run in the first inning, when three striaght singles brought Handley in, with Cody Belcher getting credit for the RBI.

Belcher was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Handley went 2-for-4. The Rockets tallied six hits, all singles.

Large went 31/3 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs. He struck out three Panthers with one walk.

Huntsville later lost 5-1 to Hewitt-Trussville in the championship game.

Gardendale finished the Nike Gulf Shores Classic with a 4-1 record over four days.

The annual tournament brought 26 teams to the Gulf Coast, including a pair of schools from Oklahoma.
