Cullman City Schools celebrated the start of construction on its new career technology and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) wing at Cullman High School on Thursday.

Officials with Cullman City Schools, the city of Cullman and local agencies assembled at Cullman High School to formally break ground on the project, which will see the addition of a new two-story wing located behind the current agriculture class/shop on Fourth Street.

The new facility will provide cutting-edge space for STEM programs, cybersecurity, health science, educators and training, computer science and marketing classrooms. The project will also include 3,900 square feet of dedicated space (on the lower level) for modern manufacturing, as well as 150 additional parking spaces for students and staff.

“I believe Cullman City Schools is one of the leading Alabama school systems in career technical education and STEM initiatives,” superintendent Kyle Kallhoff said. “Three years ago we created a kindergarten-through-high school STEM alignment, from exposure to exploration, for the application of STEM concepts. Today’s groundbreaking is a huge step in our alignment of these priorities.”

Kallhoff also thanked Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs and the Cullman city council for their partnership, as well as staff and administration across Cullman High School and the school’s career tech and STEM departments.

“We are grateful for the partnership with Cullman City Schools and the ability to help provide this opportunity for local students,” Cullman city council president pro-tem Johnny Cook added.

Cullman City Schools has developed programs that are aligned with local and area industry needs, with courses of study focused on engineering, computer science, health science, cyber security, educators and training, animal sciences and marketing.
