St. Bernard Prep senior Willa Smith named National Merit finalist

St. Bernard Preparatory School senior Willa Smith has been named a National Merit Finalist, a prestigious honor recognizing outstanding academic achievement.
Headmaster Phuong Nguyen shared the news with Smith and her classmates during lunch in the dining hall Monday, Feb. 10.
“Out of 3.6 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT, Willa is among the 15,000 students nationwide who have advanced to Finalist standing,” said Nguyen. “This distinction not only recognizes her exceptional academic ability, but also qualifies her for National Merit Scholarship opportunities.”
To become a National Merit Finalist, students must meet rigorous academic and citizenship criteria, submit an application, achieve a confirming SAT or ACT score, provide a principal’s recommendation and compose a personal essay.

According to a statement from the prep school, “Smith’s dedication and perseverance through this process have rightfully earned her this esteemed recognition.”
Following the announcement, Smith’s peers, faculty and family celebrated with a congratulatory cake, honoring her hard work and success.

Smith plans on attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
The school’s Facebook page stated. “St. Bernard Prep extends its heartfelt congratulations to Willa for this incredible accomplishment and looks forward to her continued success.”
