Cullman County Library preps for annual celebrations

Wizards and muggles alike will be welcome at the Cullman County Public Library’s main branch this week to celebrate two birthdays which bookworms will be sure to enjoy.

Even those who haven’t received their acceptance letters from Hogwarts, venture through the invisible entrance to Platform 9 3/4 as they make their way to Harry Potter’s annual birthday party Wednesday, July 31.

The boy who lived will be 44-years-old, but Cullman County Library Director Amber Thornton said activities have already been planned for all Harry Potter fans regardless of their age or Hogwarts house.

“We’re really excited about this even as adults. Harry Potter is my favorite book ever. We are all big fans around here, so we felt like we might have some older people who want to come out as well,” Thornton said.

The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. with cake and polyjuice potion — no need to worry about transfiguration though, hairs from Crabbe and Goyle have been omitted from the recipe. Guests will also be able to brew their own potions at a sand-art station or cast a slightly less lethal version of the Avada Kedavra spell which will “pin the scar on Harry.”

Thornton said guests are highly encouraged to wear their best dress robes to the event as a costume contest will begin being judged at 10:30 a.m. and followed by a spirited round of Harry Potter trivia.

For those looking for a slightly more subdued affair, the library will be hosting the 3rd “birthday” celebration of Cullman’s local Dolly Parton Imagination Library Thursday, Aug. 1, also at 10 a.m.

In participating areas, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library sends free, age-appropriate books to children ages five and under each month. Since the Cullman charter began three years ago, it has grown to serve nearly 60 percent of the county’s under-five population.

To celebrate, the organization will be serving cupcakes and hearing from local author Caris Snider as she reads from her latest work “There’s and Elephant on my Chest.”
