Nic Fallin showed out at this year’s USATF Region 6 Junior Olympic Championships on Thursday and Friday, dominating the decathlon in the 17-18 division.
The Cold Springs junior competed in the 100-meter dash (11.90), long jump (6.04m), shot put (10.56m), high jump (1.81m), 400-meter dash (58.42m), 110-meter hurdles (17.10), discus (33.52m), pole vault (4.00m), javelin (33.07m) and 1,500-meter run (5:34.45) at Hughes Field in Mississippi.
He finished with 5,376 total points and qualified for the National Junior Olympics — set for July 22-28 in College Station, Texas.
Fallin said he overcame a tough start to finish strong.
“The first day did not go well,” he said. “I went back to the hotel wanting to go home, but I didn’t. I prayed for things to go better that next day of competition. I woke up in a good mood and PR’d in three events (110-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,500-meter). The conditions weren’t great, but I didn’t let it get to me.”
Fallin dealt with high heat and three lightning delays across the two-day competition, which limited him to just one throw with the javelin and potentially cost him a shot at a record overall decathlon score.
“It’s time to focus on the Junior Olympics,” he said. “This meet showed what I really need to focus on and to always remember all glory to God.”
