VINEMONT — Vinemont High School unveiled recently completed renovations Monday, Aug. 19, which has freed up valuable classroom space as well as given students access to a new library and science lab.
Cullman County Schools Superintendent Shane Barnette said, like the majority of schools in the district, the student population at Vinemont has experienced a bit of a boom over the past several years and the school had been quickly running out of functional classroom space. The renovations unveiled Monday used what he described as an “underutilized” area on campus to create additional classrooms.
A group of Vinemont journalism students had already begun attending class in the new library as Monday’s ribbon-cutting event was taking place. While several students spoke highly of the charm of the previous library, they also recognized the functionality that would come with the new facility and were happy to be out of the temporary mobile classroom unit the library, most recently, occupied.
“It looks really nice in here,” student, Chase Benett said. “It will take a little bit of getting used to with it being a new space, but as time goes on and they get everything unpacked and set up, I think it is going to be really good.”
The footprint of the library itself has been slightly reduced, but Barnette said in doing so, the school was able to add a new science lab and three office spaces/data rooms. All of which can be used to house classes if needed.
“We were able to take a 56-year-old library and create a new media center and data room that can quickly be made ready for even more classrooms,” Barnette said.
